Measuring Stick Analogy for Building a House 0:02

כמשל אמת הבנין like a measuring rod שאינו בא בגדר שטח הבנין עצמו לאורך ורוחב, when you want to build a house, so let's say you want to build a house 150 feet this way by 100 feet that way, and it has to be, I don't know, three stories high, that's I don't know, how tall is that, let's say 45 feet, let's say it's tall, you know, tall floors or something, and then each room has different sizes, this one's 10 by 12, this one's 8 by 6, you know, and then you have the doorway, and then the trim, and the windows, and you have all these different measurements.

So what do you got to do when you want to build a house? You have to go to the measuring stick store, and you have to buy yourself a 150 ft measuring stick for the one side and a 100 ft measuring stick for the other side, and then you have to buy for each room the 10 ft one and the 12 ft one, the 6 ft one, right?

That's what you have to do, right? No, that's ridiculous. That's not what you do, right? You get one measuring thing, and you use it for the whole thing.

That's ridiculous. You don't buy a one for each size. You buy one meter stick or one, you know, yard stick, and we're talking about feet, so a yard stick, or one foot stick, a ruler.

If you want to measure 100 ft, you take the ruler and you put it down once, you put it down another time, and another time, and another time, and then you measure out 100 ft.

And if it has little inches on, marked marked off on it, then you can measure inches, too. All you need is the smallest measurement that you're ever going to need, the smallest unit that you're ever going to need to measure, and once you have that, then you just have to multiply it over and over again.

Choosing the Smallest Unit as Measurement Basis 1:29

Right? So that's the idea and of the קו is that all it has to do is create that idea of up and down. Once you made the smallest unit of up and down, then you can measure out any שטח you want already.

It's already היולי then to measure out anything, in any direction, any size. You just have to create your standard of measurement, and then you just multiply it over and over, right? You don't have to have a separate one for each thing. רק שבו מודד כמה מדידות לאורך וכמה מדידות לרוחב, but with the same measuring stick you measure every length and every width. You just do it over and over, right?

It's a magic היולי measuring rod. You know, people say we don't have magic stuff. We have magic היולי measuring sticks that can measure out any length. It's kind of like a genie in a bottle. You can just buy this ruler and it will measure out any length for you that you want.

Amazing. היולי powers. והוא עצמו רק כמו קו קצר, and all it is is a little line, little stick, right? שכלול כל אופני מדידות של אורך ורוחב וכולי, and in this stick is hidden all possible combinations of lengths and widths, all different lengths, it's all there. So the with the idea of creating the קו is that you just create a way to measure, a system, a way to measure what's up and down and right and left and everything, and once you create that system, then you can measure out anything.

But you didn't actually measure them out yet. It's not an actual המשכה. You didn't actually measure out a certain length and width. You just created the ability to measure a length and width. It's still היולי, it's still infinite.

Line as Teacher’s Tool to Assess Students 3:11

In the classroom of math, the lesson plan is the line that you use to measure up, size up a student and figure out what level he's on and how to teach him.

A teacher, though, also has the central ability to do that, which he could use for any class, which is the real line. That's the real היולי line is that he can create a a system, a a you know, hierarchy for any class and a way to measure up any student and a way to divide it up.

כך ציור הקו בבחינת היולי לגבי בחינת שטח האותיות לעשותם באורך ורוחב. So, too, a line is also היולי for the שטח of letters, to be able to write them in a length and a width. So let's say like yeah, a little kid like also she's teaching them how to write the ABCs, my wife's teaching them, right? So you say, do you know how to write the, kids, do you know how to write the ABCs?

And they say no. And you say, well, can you make a line? And they say yeah. Say, well if you can make a line, then you can make the ABCs. Look, I'll show you. Make a line here like that, and then make another one here like that, and make another one here like that, and now you have an A.

Three lines, all you got to do. Take the same line and do it three times and like first like this and then like that like that, and then you have an A. Take the same three and put them in a different way, and you have an N, or put them a different way, you have a Y. You know, it's magic, yeah. Magic lines, right? So that's like that קו.

Letter ב Lines Form English N – The Analogy 4:36

קו is היולי to make any letters. See? Now we're going to get the the משל here: כמו בבחינת קווין שבאות הב' וכולי, like the lines in the letter ב', right? It's three lines, and you can take those same three lines and you can put them together into the English letter N. וכולי כמו שמבואר במקום אחר, as explained elsewhere. לפי זה, based on this, גם ראשית המשכת הקו מן הנקודה וכו' like the lines in letter ב, right?

It's three lines, and you can take those same three lines and you can put them together into the English letter N. וכו' כמו שמבואר במקום אחר, is explained elsewhere. לפי זה, and based on this, גם ראשית המשכת הקו מן הנקודה, even the first המשכה of the קו from the נקודה coming out from the רשימו, הגם שהוא בבחינת התפשטות והמשכה, even though the ראשית הקו, this is this is called the ראשית הקו, this little היולי קו.

It says it all it does it goes from up to down. That means that it didn't go all the way out to make the whole lesson plan like we would say like like you were saying. All the השם did is took the line and made it go from up to down. That means it just went out the smallest, infinitely smallest possible amount. As soon as it went out at all, it stopped, because it created the idea of up and down.

That's all we needed to be done. Once you have the smallest possible thing, now you have a context of an up and a down. That's all we wanted.

Then that concept of up and down, before and after, and all that, is just reapplied over and over again in all different directions and ways and to make all the different things. And that's the ראשית הקו which is the היולי to make all the different השתלשלות's and everything that comes out.

Just to make things relate to each other in different ways, that this one's upper, and this one's lower, and this one's righter, and this one's lefter, you know. Right. That's the gives the potential for the whole השתלשלות to take the נקודה and bring out from it all different possible break it up in all different possible ways and bring out in all different things. Though this is the ראשית המשכת הקו, the ראשית הקו it's called, מן הנקודה, גם שהוא בבחינת התפשטות והמשכה, even though it's already התפשטות והמשכה compared to the קו, אבל הוא בבחינת המשכה היולית, this is a היולי המשכה, לכלול כמה פרטי אופני המשכות לאורך ולרוחב במידה, to include many different particular ways of bringing out to length and width in the actual מידה, like the ruler that you can measure out all different kinds of houses with it.

So so too this could bring out many different could bring out anything from the קו. ולזה נקרא קו המידה, that's why it's called the measuring line, כידוע, because it's all it is the standard of measurement.

קו המידה – The Fundamental Measuring Line 6:47

ראשית הקו is called the קו המידה because it is creating the idea of a standard of measure, just the idea of making up and down. Once you have the smallest unit of up and down, then you just do that over and over again, and you can make anything you want to measure whatever you want. ועל זה מורה צורתו, and this is indicated by its shape, שהוא קצר בעצם, it's essentially short, והולך ונמשך מלמעלה למטה בלבד, it just goes from up to down.

As soon as it went down, it stopped. Because all you needed to do is make this the standard of measurement. Like we said, if you want to measure anything, you have to have the smallest one. If you just have a foot stick, then you can measure any denom- anything that's bigger than a foot, if it's in in in pieces of foot feet. You can measure 1 ft, 2 ft, 3 ft, 100 ft, but if you want to measure like 1 and 1/2 ft, then you have to have a 1/2 a foot stick.

Right? And if you want to measure inches, you have to have inch sticks. And if you want to measure millimeters, you have to have millimeter sticks. And if you want to be able to measure anything, then you have to have an anything stick, which is infinitely small.

All it is is an anything. It's just a something. A something can measure anything long as as long as it's only a something. If it's anything more than a something, then it can can't measure anything.

So if you want it to be a היולי to measure anything, then it has to just be from up to down. אבל הוא כולל בהמשכתו, עכ״פ, כל מה שיש בהעלם ההיולי דהנקודה כו', but in this המשכה, it includes, in a hidden way, everything that was hidden in the נקודה. It's able to bring out everything in the נקודה in all different ways. רק שבא באופן המשכה למטה, just that now it's coming out down.

So like the teacher that's explaining, he's bringing over the whole thing, but he's bringing over in a way that he can explain it to the level to bring to measure it out and bring it out to the level of the student. והוא בא מכח אור העצמי הנעלם בעצמות המשפיע שלפני הצמצום ע״י נקודה אחת. And so now all the explanations that are coming out, so the first they the teacher decided he's going to teach math.

That's the נקודה. And then he gets ready his קו to measure out the students to figure out how to explain it to them on their level. The explanations that he's giving, though, is the actual math the way that the teacher knows. He's they're actually getting math, even though they're getting it in a very small, short, little way, but it's the actual stuff from before the צמצום. It's just a little bit of it and in a very limited way, but it's it's actually some of that knowledge that he had.

Like he knows 1 1 2, that's actually what he knows. So what comes out from the קו is actually from before the צמצום. It's re it's re-extracting, it's extracting what was originally put in there. It's reconstituting like with the גמרא that comes out from the משנה again.

רק שהוא על דרך קו לבד, only that it's coming in a measured way, though. It's coming in just a line. ולא כמו שהוא בעצמות המשפיע, not coming the way that it's in the משפיע. In the משפיע, it's infinite, and here it's coming out just in a very thin, little way, שהוא בהרחבת הערך של העצמות ממש, and that in the משפיע, it's totally big like the עצמות.

ובקו זה, הנה אור העצמות בא לפי ערך המקבלים, but in this line, it's coming only לבד only according to the מקבלים. So if they're very little, then it's coming in a very little way. It's being measured to come down to their level. So if they're first graders, it's going to be very stupid, little things compared to him.

אבל עכ״ז, nevertheless, הרי יש בו מעין ודוגמת אור העצמות הנעלם בהנקודה כו'. Nevertheless, it does have have a מעין ודוגמה of what was hidden in the נקודה, because it's still really math, he's still explaining the same thing. They're actually understanding something that he understands. רק שבא דרך המשכה למטה, it's just coming in a way to be brought down below, על כן בא בציור קו, therefore it's in the line, that it's measured and very small, that the line shows that it's finite, that it's very thin and measured revelation.

That's what it represents. We're going to say this later that if really if you would measure out that they're on his level, then he would just talk straight the way he knows it, it wouldn't be hidden at all. He could, he could bring out the whole light from the קו again if he wanted to.

The whole light from before צמצום he could bring out. והוא בחינת היולי לכל אור ושפע המקבל וכולי ודל. And this line is a היולי for everything that comes out to the מקבלים. It is the ability to limit the light and bring it out according to their level in any which way that will be appropriate. And that is the general story of the קו, and now we're going to explain more particular things after this.
